Busan Gijang Series

This post is part of the Busan Gijang guide series. Dive deeper with each individual article below.

Why Gijang — Busan’s Best-Kept Secret

Just 30 minutes by car from Haeundae, Gijang is where Busan’s real coastline begins. A haenyeo village where 72-year-old free-divers still harvest the sea at dawn, a Buddhist temple perched on ocean cliffs, and a sky-rail gliding above turquoise water — you can fit all of it into a single day. If you’re flying into Busan via Gimhae Airport (direct connections from Fukuoka, Tokyo-Narita, and other Asian hubs), Gijang is worth dedicating your first or last full day to.

This itinerary uses Jangssi Haenyeo-jip Yeonhwa-ri Main as base camp, departing at 09:00 and wrapping up around 16:00 — roughly 7 hours. It’s designed for a car or taxi, but the route works with public transit too.

Gijang Day Trip Timeline

09:00

Abalone Porridge Breakfast at Jangssi Haenyeo-jip

approx. 40 min

Start your Gijang day the way locals do — with a steaming pot of abalone porridge. Jangssi Haenyeo-jip Yeonhwa-ri Main opens daily at 09:00, serving MSG-free porridge made from a 51-year family recipe. Whole wild abalone from the waters right out front is slow-cooked into a thick, silky congee and brought to your table in a traditional iron pot. One spoonful and you'll have all the energy you need for a full day of exploring. A pot for two costs 12,000 KRW, with unlimited side dishes. English picture menus are available, and Visa/Mastercard are accepted. Note: this is a seafood-focused restaurant, so vegetarian options are very limited.

TIP

Arrive between 09:00 and 10:00 for the freshest first batch straight off the stove.

Stroll Through Yeonhwa-ri Haenyeo Village

approx. 30 min

Step outside the restaurant and you’re already in Yeonhwa-ri Haenyeo Village — a working fishing community where Korea’s legendary female free-divers (haenyeo) have harvested the sea for generations. Along the coast, seafood eateries and small shops stretch in a long line, a bit like a pojangmacha row, rather than a curated “mural village.” You may spot haenyeo grandmothers sorting the day’s catch — the salty bustle of a real working harbor strip.

TIP

Haenyeo diving schedules depend on the tides. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them emerging from the water with their day’s harvest.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

approx. 1 hour

A 10-minute drive from Yeonhwa-ri brings you to Haedong Yonggungsa, one of the few Buddhist temples in Korea built directly on an ocean cliff. Descend the 108 stone steps and the roar of waves crashing against the rocks below creates an atmosphere unlike any inland temple. The golden Dharma statue, the zodiac animal carvings, and the sunrise pavilion all make for unforgettable photos.

TIP

Arriving before 11:00 AM lets you avoid the heaviest tourist crowds. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — there are a lot of stairs.

Blueline Park Beach Train & Sky Capsule

approx. 1 hr 30 min

From the temple, it’s a 15-minute drive to Mipo Station. Board the Sky Capsule — a colorful glass pod that glides along a rail above the coastline — for aerial views of the Haeundae–Cheongsapo–Songjeong shoreline. Hop off at Cheongsapo to explore the observatory and lighthouse, then take the Beach Train onward to Songjeong. This stretch of coast is why Busan keeps appearing on international “best coastal cities” lists.

TIP

Sky Capsule reservations are essential on weekends. Parking is easier near Songjeong than at Mipo.

Seafood Course Lunch at Jangssi Haenyeo-jip

approx. 1 hr 30 min

Head back to Yeonhwa-ri and finish strong. If porridge was your gentle morning opener, the signature "Bada-dul" seafood course (66,000 KRW) is the full Gijang ocean experience. Expect flounder sashimi, anchovy sashimi, whole abalone sashimi, sea cucumber, sea squirt, conch, blanched octopus, live baby octopus, mussel soup, and steamed scallops — plus four dipping sauces and fresh greens — served at an ocean-view table on the second floor. Add the butter-grilled abalone (32,000 KRW) for a perfect finale. Staff can handle basic English orders, and international credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted.

TIP

Call ahead to reserve a second-floor ocean-view seat — it makes all the difference.

Practical Tips You Actually Need

Parking

Free parking for 250 cars at Jangssi Haenyeo-jip. Haedong Yonggungsa and Blueline Park both have paid lots.

Budget

Roughly 90,000 KRW for two (porridge 12,000 KRW × 2 + Bada-dul course 66,000 KRW + Beach Train 7,000 KRW × 2). Visa and Mastercard accepted at most stops.

Best seasons

Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) are ideal. Summer lets you combine the trip with beach time; winter offers a crowd-free temple visit.

Public transit

Haeundae Station → Bus 181 → Yeonhwa-ri (about 40 min). Or Donghae Line to Gijang Station → 10-min taxi.

Language

English picture menus are available at Jangssi Haenyeo-jip. Staff can handle basic English. Google Translate works well for everything else.

Dietary note

Gijang cuisine is overwhelmingly seafood-based. Strict vegetarian or vegan options are extremely limited at local restaurants.

What Makes This Itinerary Different

This isn’t a checklist of tourist stops. It’s a single narrative woven by the sea. You open the morning with abalone porridge made by a 72-year-old haenyeo, walk through the village where she dives, gaze up at the cliffs the ocean carved into a temple, soar above the coastline in a sky capsule, and then sit down to a full seafood course harvested from that same water — all in one day. Gijang’s ocean isn’t just scenery here; it’s the thread that ties your entire day together.
